California rent relief deal would halt evictions without erasing debt

California tenants would avoid eviction if they pay some of their rent this year under a stopgap deal unveiled on Friday.
"We did land on an agreement on evictions," Gov. Gavin Newsom said Friday. "I look forward to signing it."
With renters around the state reeling after the coronavirus pandemic and the ensuing shutdown wrecked California’s economy, Newsom and lawmakers have been scrambling to avert a cascade of displacement. A court-ordered halt on evictions is set to expire on Wednesday.
The agreement would offer some protection against eviction without absolving renters of their debts, according to legislative sources who were not authorized to speak publicly. Renters could not be evicted for payments missed between March and August of this year, but landlords could seek to recoup that debt through the civil courts…Read more.

OAKLAND — Gov. Gavin Newsom's Task Force on Business and Jobs Recovery announced Wednesday it's launching a consumer campaign to help boost California's small businesses "bridge the digital divide" and reach new customers during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The effort includes partnership with industry giants including Google, Nextdoor and UPS, which have signed on to "help small business improve their online presence'' with a new website aimed at connecting businesses with consumers in their local communities.
